10 Years gone…

Posted in Uncategorized on April 14, 2012 by whiskeyt

April 21st marks our 10 year anniversary. Terrifying isn’t it?

Our friends at SWAP! ‘zine ran a feature on us in their fourth issue that collects some of our thoughts about the whole thing. Check it out if you want to hear what we had to say.

On April 21st we will be playing at Frog and Peach Pub, the same place Pennyjar played it’s first ever show on April 21st 2002. It’s been a good ride so far. Some former members will be showing up and we will be going super deep in the archives to play some stuff we haven’t played in a hell of a long time. We will play “Hell or Highwater” and “Rise ‘N’ Shine” in their entirety though probably not in order. If I ever had to classify one show as a must this would be it.

See ya at the party…

Well it’s been 8 years since our last album. We were overdue to say the least. If everything goes just perfect we may get this album mixed properly and released in all of the usual formats. However there is no guarantee that this will come to pass. So this might be it. Take a listen. Download it for free. Download it and pay, which may help it get a proper release. Drop us a line and let us know what you think.

Hard song to cut. Always envisioned a mariachi band in the middle bit but it never came to pass.

“Cryin Drunk”

Posted in Uncategorized on July 23, 2011 by whiskeyt

Been awhile since we posted a “preview” track for the album. So why not “Cryin Drunk” next. Our buddy Ephraim Sommers threw down a vocal part on this that took the song to a whole different place. I dig it quite a bit and i’m betting you will too.

“Cryin’ Drunk”

Long time..

Yeah we’ve been a little off the grid. Played some unexpected shows this past weekend in anticipation of a very expected show coming up tomorrow at Frog and Peach.

This’ll be the first full on Pennyjar show in quite sometime so make sure you come out and get a little on ya. We’ve got a fair amount of pent up Pennyjarness for you so expect the evening to be full tilt the whole time. Our good buddies Ghosts of Guadalupe are opening the show so get there early to take full advantage of what will be a long night of rock goodness.

“How You Got ‘Em”

Posted in Uncategorized on January 12, 2011 by whiskeyt

Next up on the album preview schedule is “How You Got ‘Em”. This was the first song Steve wrote for the band and it’s one of my absolute favorites. I don’t think I mention it often enough but Steve Watson is one of my favorite songwriters. He doesn’t write too many but when he does they always kill.

We used to have a song called “Devil I Know” that had a similar structure and feel to it but once we started doing “How Ya Got ‘Em” we knew which song was the superior cut. This song also benefits from Jenny’s harp a fair amount. Along with another song that we haven’t recorded yet “How Ya Got ‘Em” was demoed by Steve and I at his house awhile back. The original was slower (seems to happen that way a lot) and much more sparse. Hopefully that recording will see the light of day sometime soon.

Check the track out on our “Music” page or over at our Bandcamp site.

“Take the Whiskey”

For the first preview of our nearly completed album we went with “Take the Whiskey”. I don’t think any recorded version has surfaced before so it’s a fresh one. It’s also a quickie. I love short songs for some reason, which I don’t think is related to my attention span, if I could i’d make an album that was 10 songs and 15min long.

The first few lines for this song came to me while I was driving up to Ragged Point. The lyrics rolled in so fast that I had to pull over and write everything down. I have a demo of this song somewhere that was maybe half the speed of this song. I like the Pennyjar version better.

Right now our plan is to put up these “rough mix” songs every few days until all ten have been up. Not sure how long we will leave each of ’em up though. Consider it a preview of a preview.

Check it all out over at our bandcamp site. And let us know what you think.

Steppin’ Out

Album is in the can. How do we celebrate that? How about by playing a show tonight? Okay we will.

We will indeed be at the Frog and Peach tonight at 10pm with out buddies the Cross Brothers. John is in town for New Years and will of course be playing with us. Maybe we will play the whole new album from start to finish. Maybe not. Only way to find out is if you come on out to the show.
